Chapter 28

“Where is it?” Hailey said frantically searching her purse for her license. “I need to find it.”

“You need to calm down,” Jackson replied. “It’s probably somewhere in the car. I will look when we stop. How’s your family?” He tried changing the subject and to calm her down.

“They’re all fine. Maddie’s married with twins and lives in North Carolina. Meka’s a hair stylist in Miami. Alex is still on that daytime soap opera. Bianca is a flight attendant.”

“Wow and what about you?”

“With my nursing job, volunteering at the center, and raising two boys, my life is pretty busy.” Her statement was a whisper. She gazed over at him to detect any change in him that would signify he caught the fact she had two sons. He glanced over and smiled.

“You got your nursing degree. Congratulations.”

“Aunt Zora convinced me to go back. She even paid my tuition. I love my job. What about you?”

“I’d rather know about all the disillusioned and broken-hearted men you’ve led on with those beautiful eyes.” He stopped at a red light and glanced over at her.

“Always the smooth talker, but you never answered my question.” She knew he was trying to find out if she had a man. She wasn’t going to give him the satisfaction.

“I will later. You mentioned two sons. How old is the other one? He can’t more than a few years old.”

“His name is Justin and he’s the brightness of my life. And if Braden ―.”

“He’s what, sixteen, right?”

“And growing up too fast,” she said and sighed. “He hangs out after midnight. He comes in without an explanation of where he’s been and no apology for having me worried. Recently, we can’t have a conversation without him storming away angry. He’s out of control.”

“Has he done anything illegal?”

“No.”

“I’d have to know more about what’s going on. But I think you just need to give him some space. It could just be growing pains of a teenage boy. I went through them myself.”

“Growing Pains? It could be drugs. I see it all the time at the hospital. Kids his age being coaxed into using drugs and end up strung out or overdosing at some club. Then everyone wants to blame the parents for not being around or involved in their child’s life.” She paused to suppress her building frustration. “I try, but he won’t listen.”

“Does he have a hobby – something he likes to do?”

“He made captain of the basketball team this year.”

“Excellent. You’ve nothing to worry about. They test players randomly all the time. He must be good to make captain at his age.”

“He reminds me of you,” she said and her smile replaced the glum look on her face. “He plays much better, though.”

“I would hope so.” He chuckled. “Has his father tried talking to him?”

“His father would rather give him things and be his friend instead of trying to be a parent.”

“What about your other son’s father? Can’t he talk to Braden?”

“We don’t keep in touch.”

“Damn. I guess I could talk to him,” he said, trying not to dwell on her returned agitated state.
